“Railway stations are our contemporary architecture of democracy. They are open and accessible, they are shared spaces, they bring us together.” – Aaron Betsky, Dean of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture
At Right Angle, we don’t just provide advice. We do things ourselves and we work right through into the delivery phase with our clients. As we finally start to clear the tailwinds of Covid-19, we are determined to use the next year to bring city back.
The most notable and exciting way we are leading this city resurgence is with a new short- to medium-term precinct project called EDDY. With Transport for NSW as our client, developing EDDY has drawn upon all four of our services: Research, Strategy, Design and Delivery.
EDDY is to reanimating Central Railway Station by using a dormant retail space and filling it with a great mix of local retail and cultural experiences. Eddy Avenue and Eddy Plaza are aptly named, with an eddy being a swirling whirlpool. Watching commuters engage with Central is to see the natural ebbs and flows of footfall in peak transit hours. The name EDDY pays homage to both the avenue and the people who use it, day in and day out.
What we want to do is create a better experience of Central, generate local business and ensure a more attractive proposition for the forthcoming Tech Central. To that end, meet the EDDY class of 2022/23, a new cultural collective that includes: Shoebox sneaker laundry services; local florists Dust Flowers; Picnic by Condimental; live music and tapas on the outdoor plaza by Bears; locally-made furniture and lighting by Australian Design & Co; fruit candles by Nonna’s Grocer; a Shade Files Eyewear sunglass boutique; Planet Trip Records’ new recording studio; digital dispatches by Nomad Radio; and City Oltra, purveyors of pizza and Poor Toms gin.
The EDDY Multi-Space, Right Angle’s own creative events venue, is hosting exhibitions, screenings, product launches, talks, activations and more. EDDY is also the home of SHADES, a new venue for Golden Age Cinema & Bar with the MO ‘wine bar out front, party out back’. Think: disco-inspired cocktails in a warehouse setting, where you can catch a roster of resident DJs, special guests and experimental cinema screenings.
Come on by and join the cultural whirlpool.
