Sydney-based, family-owned specialist joiner Elan was founded in 1990 by Boris Tosic – “a Croatian-born builder, designer, and art collector who arrived in Australia with $50 and a sports bag.”

Growing from a one-man trade business into a renowned, sought-after practice, Boris’s sons Luke and Ziggy inherited directorship of the business after Boris’s passing in 2023. They now lead a 40-person in-house team of craftspeople.

Elan operates on a distinct premise: ‘making while thinking like designers’. By keeping everything in-house, they’re able to maintain end-to-end oversight and quality control over complex architectural details.

Wanting a capability statement document that reflected this bespoke, considered approach to their work, Elan came to Right Angle (we had created their brand identity a decade earlier), and we began imagining a piece of work – both digital and printed – that would do justice to the sincerity and spirit of the business. Where previous company documents had leaned more functional and practical, this project needed to bridge the age-old gap between show and tell.

Taking visual cues from small press publications, the document design used full-bleed project photography, generous layout spacing, typography drawn from their website, and content that both delved deep and kept things brief and condensed.

The resulting capability statement serves a dual purpose: a clear, factual overview for architects and trade partners, and a physical object that reflects the care, the restraint and the precision Elan apply in their craft and operations.
