At Right Angle, being asked to think about how urban environments fit – or don’t fit – the various needs of the people falls right into our sweet spot. So when JCDecaux, a bastion of outdoor media with a special interest in urban life, asked us to work with them on writing and designing a report about the untapped territory of the nighttime, we didn’t need to think very long.

Established in 1964 in Lyon, and launched in Australia in 1997, JCDecaux is the world’s biggest name in OOH. As a result, JCDecaux is a key participant in Australian public life – with deep, complex research and knowledge about how we live, what we need and what we’re missing in our urban environments.

This existing research and data provided the perfect breeding ground for Right Angle’s researchers, strategists and creatives to develop what became ‘The 5–9 Economy’ report. Where the research found that the nighttime is less party-driven, more culturally diverse and more environmentally complex than we tend to think, the report posited that this currently-underestimated and underutilised window of life is ripe with opportunity for growth. Particularly as we watch Australian cities that formally recognise the opportunity of the night outperform cities that don’t.

While cities get hotter by day turning the night into a refuge, and as deeper data about our habits prove that many cultures – including LGBTQIA+ and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse communities – use the night beyond drinking and dining, new infrastructure and policy are needed to support Australia’s future life after dark.
