How can a place brand bring together an existing community while inviting others in?

The Jewish Arts Quarter (JAQ) will be the new home for Jewish culture in Melbourne. Located in Elsternwick, it includes the Jewish Museum of Australia: Gandel Centre of Judaica, Kadimah Jewish Cultural Centre and National Library, 4C Community Co-Lab, the Jewish Holocaust Centre and a new public plaza. Bringing together art, education and a public event program, JAQ will celebrate and share one of the world’s oldest and most diverse cultures.

As a centrepiece for the JAQ brand identity and campaign, Right Angle developed a custom typeface that took inspiration from Jewish shop front typography from Melbourne and around the world. Incorporating the horizontal stress of the Hebrew alphabet it is modern, playful and meaningful and ultimately respectful to Jewish culture and relatable to all audiences.
