A public artwork for the Asian Century
Produced in collaboration with Craig & Karl, Neon Lane was created to light up an otherwise dark alley off Melbourne’s Chinatown. The permanent installation consists of 60 neon lights and light boxes, ranging from very small to five metres tall, that catch the eye, spark conversation and improve public safety at night.
The installation is inspired by high-energy streetscapes of cities like Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul. The individual artworks fuse Eastern and Western culture with ancient proverbs sitting alongside playful English phrases like ‘Let’s Dance’ translated into Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Thai.

“We selected some of the most relevant symbols in Asian culture and had some fun with them. Our inspirations included Chinese poetry and Japanese kawaii kitsch.”
