A catalytic project on Sydney’s historic east-west artery.

The oldest highway in Australia, Parramatta Road is still one of Sydney’s most significant transport corridors… and a real dog of a road. With the continued evolution of Western Sydney, this critical passage and its surrounding neighbourhoods are in the middle of transformative change and we are keen to influence positive development outcomes that can set an early benchmark for future growth.

Working for an international client, our first priority was to provide research that explained the character-rich communities, the beautiful suburbs that surround their site and the urban dynamics of the area which is heavily impacted by large transport infrastructure projects such as Sydney Metro. Building upon qualitative insights, we briefed urban planning, retail demand and economics teams to ground our strategy in hard data. Weaving this together with future audience projections, global trend analysis and emergent living models enabled us to define a suite of potential development concepts for the site and to work with the client to assess which represented highest and best use. Concluding this first stage, we presented a complete strategy package to the Director of Property in Hong Kong.

Our second phase of work moved the needle toward reality by translating the client’s existing concept into an imaginative and inspiring design brief. Right Angle’s in-house architects ensured that the leading thinking, spatial and programmatic parameters were creatively articulated, providing the best possible springboard for taking ideas from paper to concrete. Running an invited international design competition enabled Right Angle and the client to compare and assess architectural approaches and identify the most inspiring and well-suited design team. Once selected, we engaged the chosen team through compelling briefing sessions that positioned the project for success – with an intended result that will positively reshape the local area and act as a catalyst for the reimagining of Parramatta Road.
