Honouring Sydney’s cathedral of commerce
The late Harry Seidler contributed to the Australian architectural vernacular in a way few others have (or will) as he helped bring the principles of Modernism to our shores. His buildings now grace the skylines of most Australian capitals, but it’s in Sydney where he left his greatest impression. When Right Angle were approached to help turn his 1988 commercial masterpiece, Grosvenor Place, into a building fit for the future of work, we knew that honouring his craft was non-negotiable.
We started by understanding the building as it stood, with our researchers moving in to heatmap the site, documenting its ebbs and flows across the day. Over the course of a 12-week program, we worked alongside the building owners and existing tenants to produce an Enhancement Opportunity Report for Grosvenor Place, which identified six areas of focus across the iconic building. The report addressed the optimal retail mix for the external piazza, suggested solutions for a more productive common area and ultimately concluded with a “less is more” approach for a building that has long been considered a pillar for the business community.

“Grosvenor Place hasn’t been swayed by the office fads of the past decade, partly because it began its life before Silicon Valley, but mostly because Harry Seidler’s vision was for Grosvenor Place to be a cathedral of commerce – a building defined by culture, discreet interactions and big business.”
– Right Angle’s Grosvenor Place Enhancement Opportunity Report

The report led to actionable decisions for Grosvenor Place – most notably the development of a suite of third spaces across the split-level lobbies that borrowed from the traditions of great airport business lounges around the world. Right Angle remained involved through the selection and briefing of the architects for the project, including the production of early sketches and design references. The chosen practice, DesignOffice, then evolved these concepts in a way that harmonised with Seidler’s original design and intent. The Grosvenor Business Lounge was delivered in February 2021 and now provides an important and productive space for both visitors to the building and workers in the tower above.
