The city's beating green heart looks to 2050.
Sydney Olympic Park is on the cusp of great change. The 640-hectare urban parkland is endowed with the kind of assets most contemporary urban neighbourhoods can only dream of: scale, CBD proximity and national significance, all of which have played an important role in its evolution since hosting the 2000 Olympic Games.
For over a year now, Right Angle has been engaged by Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) to help formulate and articulate a future vision for this landmark site. Our first piece of this work was driven by research and strategy to determine what retail should come to look and feel like in Sydney Olympic Park.
We consolidated our findings into four key objectives of effective retail: to adjust the city's perception of Sydney Olympic Park from being simply a great place for events to also having desirable everyday experiences; to define each of the clearly defined sub-precincts as their own unique proposition; to create a thriving local economy that both creates and sustains employment; and to foster social cohesion and a Sydney Olympic Park-specific sense of community identity.
Masterplanning projects often suffer from a complexity of ideas and poor clarity of expression. With some of Australia’s leading urban consultants at the table – SGS Economics and Planning, Atelier Ten, Cred Consulting, SJB, UTS, Yerrabingin, Urbis and ourselves – and one of the most significant acts of urban renewal at stake, SOPA understood the importance of communicating with both stakeholders and the general public.
Right Angle’s creative team embarked on a communications campaign for SOPA, helping distil the core thinking behind their 2050 Vision into a clear visual language that could be easily understood by a range of audiences. The first step in the process was to develop a stakeholder engagement presentation. This became an integral tool throughout the approvals process, while the preparation of materials for public exhibition will ensure that the future of Sydney Olympic Park is one shared with the people of the emerging neighbourhood and city.
Our editorial team restructured complex SOPA documents and data sets to tell the simple but powerful narrative of Sydney Olympic Park’s past, present and future. By reinterpreting this content with a more accessible tone and friendly design for readers, Right Angle assisted SOPA in ensuring that the vision for Sydney Olympic Park in 2050 could be digested by any and everyone that needed to see it.
Right Angle art directed and briefed local photographer Declan Blackall to document life in Sydney Olympic Park today, emphasising the foundations of its future as a highly-connected series of neighbourhoods and diverse experiences. In addition to Declan's evocative images, Right Angle also illustrated a selection of key future moments throughout the vision document and produced a set of digital visual assets for use in promoting SOPA's 2050 vision.
